چکیده

In this study, we examined hydroxyl radical ( OH) formation with respect to photoreactivity of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), the Fenton reaction, and photoflocculation using leachate from decaying wood. The relationship between OH photoproduction rate and leachate optical properties (UV-visible absorption and fluorescence excitationemission matrices (EEMS)) was studied during irradiation using a UV solar simulator. The results showed that the OH photochemical formation rate is strongly related to humic-like fluorescence as characterized by parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), and that these fluorescence components are more photolabile than most of the other CDOM components. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) indicated the photodegradation of lignin-related structures. To examine the role of iron and OH in the photoflocculation process, Fe speciation (particulate Fe, organically-complexed Fe(II), organically-complexed Fe(III), free Fe(II), and free Fe(III)) were measured in the leachate samples amended with Fe. The addition of Fe accelerated OH production substantially, and Fe was photochemically cycled between Fe(II) and Fe(III). The photodegradation of iron complexing ligands appears to play an important role in DOM photoflocculation.

Effect of pH and oxalate on hydroquinone-derived hydroxyl radical formation during brown rot wood degradation.

The redox cycle of 2,5-dimethoxybenzoquinone (2,5-DMBQ) is proposed as a source of reducing equivalent for the regeneration of Fe2+ and H2O2 in brown rot fungal decay of wood. Oxalate has also been proposed to be the physiological iron reductant. We characterized the effect of pH and oxalate on the 2,5-DMBQ-driven Fenton chemistry and on Fe3+ reduction and oxidation. Hydroxyl radical formation ...

Dietary phytate lowers K-ras mutational frequency, decreases DNA-adduct and hydroxyl radical formation in azoxymethane-induced colon cancer

Objective(s): Dietary phytate is known to protect against azoxymethane (AOM)-induced preneoplastic lesions.  The present study was designed to determine whether dietary phytate affects mutation frequency in colon epithelial cells challenged with azoxymethane in vivo, through lowering the formation of O6-methyl guanosine (O6-MeG) and 8-hydroxy deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) ad...

Degradation of 4-Nitrophenol from industrial wastewater by nano catalytic Ozonation

ABSTRACT: In this project, a nano catalyst (TiO2) and ozone combined with each other and they were used for the removal of 4-nitrophenol (4NP) in industerial wastewater. The effect of some operational parameters such as initial pH (3-9), the concentration of pollutant (20-80 mg/L), and amount of TiO2 were investigated. In O3/TiO2 process, the anion radical  formed before the production of hydro...

Acetylation of wood – A review

Wood is a porous three dimensional, hydroscopic, viscoelastic, anisotropic bio-polymer composite composed of an interconnecting matrix of cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin with minor amounts of inorganic elements and organic extractives. Some, but not all, of the cell wall polymer hydroxyl groups are accessible to moisture and these accessible hydroxyls form hydrogen bonds with water. As the...

Reaction Dynamics of NH2+OH on an Interpolated Potential Energy Surface

QCT calculations were performed to study the behavior of energized NH2OH formed by association collision of NH2 radical with OH radical. A potential energy surface that describes the behavior of the title reaction has been constructed by interpolation of ab initio data. H2O, HON, HNO, NH3, O, H2NO, cis or trans-HONH, and H products and two vibrationally energized NH2OH and NH3O adducts were obs...
